Kinuyo Tanaka Retrospective

March 18 – March 27, 2022
4:30 – 8:30PM

Film at Lincoln Center is honored to pay tribute to Kinuyo Tanaka’s monumental place in film history with a retrospective, taking place March 18—27, and I am pleased to offer the Asian American Arts Alliance community discounted tickets: Use code TANAKA for $5 off any screening during the retrospective.

In an industry deprived of female filmmakers and amid outcries from her mentors, the Japanese master directed half a dozen films between 1953 and 1962 with a determined sense of freedom and touches of provocation, placing women at the forefront of her movies as mistresses, prostitutes, poets, heroines, and victims of social injustice.

In addition to her directorial triumphs—including six newly restored rare films—to celebrate Tanaka’s brilliance in front of the camera as well as behind it, we are screening six of her personal favorite films and highlights as an actor, all on 35mm prints.

Highlights include introductions from co-curator Lili Hinstin at the following screenings:

Friday, March 18th:
Love Letter (6:30pm)
The Moon Has Risen (9pm)

Saturday, March 19th:
Forever A Woman (6:30pm)
The Wandering Princess (9pm)

Sunday, March 20th:
Girls of Night (6pm)
Love Under the Crucifix (8:15pm)
