Carpenter (Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art) for this discussion on the imagery of male youths in Japanese painting, from medieval to early modern times. His lecture will contextualize ukiyo-e prints depicting handsome and stylishly dressed wakashu—the “ third gender” at the core of Japan Society’s spring exhibition, A Third Gender: Beautiful Youths in Japanese Prints.
