Gamelan Kusuma Laras presents Klenèngan: Classical Javanese Music in an Informal Setting

Saturday, December 13, 2025
4 – 10PM

Gamelan Kusuma Laras’s 2025 Klenèngan!

Klenèngan are musical events featuring musicians who gather for a kind of Javanese jam session. In Java, gamelan music is often inseparable from the arts of poetry, dance and various forms of theater such as dance-drama, and shadow-puppet play (wayang kulit), and are usually integral parts of special occasions or social events. Performances which are purely musical are called klenèngan and are usually given in the context of some sort of celebration. Often arranged by a family to celebrate a special occasion such as a wedding, circumcision, memorial, and other life event, the performance is integrated into a social gathering during which guests enjoy music, snacks, and conviviality, lasting long into the night.

Music begins at 4 PM and ends at 10 PM, for two sets:

  • Set 1: 4-6 PM
  • Set 2: 7-10 PM
  • $20 suggested donation. Come for the first set, stay for the second set for free!

Gamelan Kusuma Laras is directed by I.M. Harjito. This klenèngan will feature special guests Darsono Hadiraharjo and Peni Candrarini.
