Divine Intervention
Through interdisciplinary research methods, this activation space gathers stories of love and solidarity within global freedom struggles. Divine Intervention uplifts the work of cultural workers, organizers, and artists drawing together diverse stories of devotion to their communities during the COVID years (2020-present).
This installation translates several interview processes into applied textile, collage, and photographic and video-based interpretations of daily rituals of care, commitment, and recovery that are rooted in anti-imperialism and decolonization. Utilizing plant matter as a means of connecting the spirit of nature with oral traditions, Divine Intervention considers that for many, the path towards freedom includes tapping into a variety of healing methods and practices that inform and assist in navigating life’s many twists and turns illustrating varying expressions of love and presence inviting the audience to reflect on how war, genocide, and freedom impact us all..
This work honors and celebrates the deep interpersonal relationships between Black and Asian communities who build and share collectively with intention in their movement work. Each story centers the acts of sustaining wellness in commitment to self and community while paying homage to freedom fighters of the past, present, and future. The opening reception included an interactive collaborative ritual performance titled Untrapped by dear friends Lehna Huie and Yalini Dream.
