Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 15, and as a grieving daughter whose 아빠 died on September 26, 2023, for me, this day is shrouded in a tremendous amount of grief. Last year, I felt massive waves of emotions — longing, nostalgia, anxiety, overwhelm, love, regret, anger, despair, 정, 한.
For our grievers, I wanted to create a grief practice, ritual, and tradition for us to metabolize our Father’s Day grief in the company of others. For all of us, I wanted to create a safe space for us to reflect on our relationships with our fathers.
Living fathers. Deceased fathers. Absent fathers. Present fathers. Estranged fathers. Fathers from which we have chosen estrangement. Sensitive fathers. Stoic fathers. Angry fathers. Joyful fathers. Fathers we’ve never known. Fathers we wish we could’ve known. Fathers of which we have few or no memories. Supportive fathers. Distant fathers. Ailing fathers. Imperfect fathers. Beloved fathers.
For me, 아빠 could’ve fit into any combination of these categories, at different times in our lives. What about you?
