Ashni & Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez at Public Records
12 – 10PM
Ashni is a New York-based singer, pianist, songwriter and composer. Exploring our relationship to self, our communities, and our natural world, Ashni weaves jazz, R&B, and pop, with a thread of the North Indian folk music she grew up with. She evokes the incisiveness and soul of Regina Spektor and Hiatus Kaiyote and the genre-crossing, form-expansion of Arooj Aftab and Rosalia, enveloping listeners in a reflective, cathartic dimension, providing “haunting relief” (Kajal Mag), and forging a new sound.
Her EP “Who I Dreamed Of” released in March 2022. Forthcoming work includes a full-length album set to release in winter 2024, and a collaboration on Ganavya Doraiswamy’s “How To Cure A Ghost: The Album,” songs made from Fariha Roisin’s poetry.
With over 3.5 million streams and a growing audience, Ashni has filled rooms and captivated crowds at renowned venues like Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, WNYC’s The Greene Space, National Sawdust in NYC, Sunset Sunside in Paris, The Quarter at the Royal Opera House Mumbai, and more. She is a NYFA Women’s Fund recipient and a member of the Resistance Revival Chorus. Her music has been featured on Spotify’s Women of Jazz playlist, in Ayodele Casel’s “Where We Dwell” at New York City Center, and the acclaimed, Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls.
Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a singer/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a family of musicians, music was Raina’s first language and it runs deep within her veins. Rooted in Jazz and R&B, the songwriter invites us into her unique sonic world with harmonic nuance and lyrical poetry.
Raina’s cross-genre style is built from the bottom up. With improvisation as a starting point for her songs, Raina draws on her emotionality and leans into her perception of the world around, uncovering hidden depths within daily life and articulating personal truth with vulnerability and bravery.
With over 1M streams on Spotify and a budding global audience, RSG has packed rooms at prestigious venues such as Joe’s Pub, Public Records, Brooklyn Bowl, SOB’s, NuBlu and many others.
