A Tribute to Donald Richie, Pt 1 concludes with Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s second feature After Life (1998). Filmed with Kore-eda’s signature humanist touch, After Life is a fantasy revolving around the recently deceased arriving at a Purgatory-like way station, where they have to choose one memory to take with them before moving on into the next world.
