About The Education Department:

The Queens Museum’s Education Department offers a range of free and low-cost award-winning learning experiences that connect people across the lifespan with the Museum’s acclaimed exhibitions, collections, artist projects, and public programs. They take place at the Museum and also at various community partner sites across the borough of Queens, a county of 2.4 million people and one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse places in the world. This community work includes long-term partnerships with over 30 Queens public schools, various Queens Library branches, hospitals, social service agencies, adult rehabilitation centers, and much more. In all this work, the education department is committed to promoting the agency and imagination of all people, regardless of their backgrounds.

Position Overview:

The Queens Museum seeks interdisciplinary Artist-Educators working across a range of media who bring new approaches to materials-based artistic practices.

Working closely with the QM’s Education Department, Queens Museum teaching artists are part of a diverse team of creative, highly motivated, and reflective educators interested in working with diverse audiences, in particular teens and youth.

Teaching Artists promote student interpretation of visual art and material culture using a variety of strategies both in Queens Museum galleries, public school classrooms, and at community partnership sites. Teaching artists develop and lead hands-on projects that promote student learning in and through the arts.

Ideal candidates will be experienced in teaching diverse audiences in a range of learning environments who bring a fresh perspective to innovative curricula and creative exploration.

Essential Functions:

Leading art-making sessions in school classrooms in collaboration with teachers at the Museum’s partner public schools and partner sites.

Facilitating guided museum experiences and tours for visiting school and adult groups through exhibitions at the Museum.

Developing thematic curriculum and supporting lesson plans that integrate the museum’s permanent and changing exhibitions with relevant content in school curriculums

Leading a program that allows students to investigate source objects or materials, promotes guided discussions and hands-on art activities and meets the goal of supporting teachers in their classroom teaching. QM art instruction is expected to address all appropriate standards of Visual Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math, when applicable.

Participating in staff professional development workshops, seminars, and other activities with education staff, curators, and other specialists.

Educators are expected to independently read recommended or assigned readings related to permanent and changing exhibitions. Educators are also expected to maintain an awareness of public school Common Core curriculum and National Blueprints for the Arts Standards.

Maintaining and organizing art materials for art-making sessions.

Compiling lists of necessary art-making materials and generating a digital lesson plan that can be referenced by collaborating teachers.

Compensation:

$40.00 per hour for teaching, professional development and training

Paid hours include teaching, planning, and professional development time

Qualifications:

Experience as a teaching artist or arts educator with K-12 students

Experience designing lesson plans and/ or visual arts curriculum.

Experience teaching in public school settings a plus

Experience with Collaborative Team Teaching environments and/ or inclusion classes a plus

Studio art experience

Ongoing personal visual art practice is a plus

Bilingual in any of the following languages is a plus: Spanish, Mandarin, Bangla, Arabic, and Korean, ASL

Requirements:

Education background in Studio Art, Museum Education, Art History, Education, Architecture or related fields or its work experience equivalent
