United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, IATSE, is accepting applications for the position of full-time Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant reports directly to the Local’s Financial Secretary as well as the National Director and is responsible for the accounting and strategic financial planning of the organization. In addition—aside from engaging with staff and Local Union leadership—the role communicates with external vendors and our outside CPA.
This person will also coordinate with other staff in the Membership & Finance Department and have contact with office leadership and Union Officers. When needed, this person will communicate with outside CPA.
The salary range for this position is $75K-$85K, plus an excellent benefits package—including a 401(k) match, transit benefit, and great health benefits. This position is based in our New York City office.
Description of Duties:
• Execute Accounts Payable and Receivable and manage/track payments to vendors and collections
• Reconcile all bank accounts and investment accounts
• Ensure financial accuracy and accountability: match bank statements with internal records, develop and track budgets, monitor and report cash flow and levels, and investigate charges as needed
• Remit payroll as well as prepare reports and transmit payment to employee benefit funds, including calculating pay and issuing payments to employees and other union personnel
• Create financial statements and financial reports
• Register for state income tax and SUI tax
• Assist with various annual audits and filings as needed
• Maintain a coherent system of accounts and file system
• Work to ensure sustainable practices across our financial department
• Perform other duties as required
Requirements
Skills Requirements:
• Familiarity with labor union and/or nonprofit accounting principles preferred
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills
• High degree of computer literacy including proficiency of:
o MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel)
o QuickBooks (desktop)
o Importing data into accounting software- Payroll, Credit Card
• Familiarity with online Commercial banking platforms, ACH and Wire execution
• Can work independently as well as an in team setting, while helping collaborate on own and departmental goals
• High degree of emotional intelligence; experience working with people from a diverse array of backgrounds
• Cares about the details: High level of organization, time management, and operational effectiveness
• Naturally enterprising, genuinely curious, and a passion for the value and necessity of the labor movement
About the Candidate:
The successful applicant should have great communication skills—both verbal and written—and have relevant accounting experience with impeccable organizational and record keeping skills. In addition, the right person for this position will value the labor movement and have a keen interest in better learning about the entertainment industry—particularly the various crafts represented by Local USA 829. The ability to drive sustainability, enterprise, innovate, and collaborate with many stakeholders are key components of this position.
Previous experience within the entertainment industry, labor movement, or other advocacy organizations is a plus.
