The Bronx Council on the Arts is seeking applications to curate its Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos Summer 2022 group exhibition, Light & Shadow: Rethinking Visual Spaces (June 17– August 19, 2022). The selected curator will be responsible for contacting and sourcing all materials from artists, writing exhibition texts, and facilitating a public program. We encourage curatorial proposals by emerging and independent curators who are unafraid of experimentation and familiar with artists from The Bronx. This call for proposal expands our mission of supporting emerging artists from underrepresented groups such as women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and artists of color. Further, we continue our commitment to present exhibitions in various media, including interdisciplinary practices that connect artists in the Bronx and beyond.

Light & Shadow: Rethinking Visual Spaces

Light and Shadow: Rethinking Visual Spaces is a group exhibition to be held at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, featuring mostly Bronx-based/affiliated artists who manipulate light and shadow in their artworks to create powerful visual and narrative statements. This exhibition will primarily spotlight three-dimensional and interactive works that incorporate light and motion-based technologies, celebrating the legacy of artistic experimentation within The Bronx and drawing the audience’s awareness to the innovative practices utilized by the borough’s artists today. Through these works, artists address the polarized role of technology in our lives and the tangible effects of light and its absence—including on mental health and perception, as well as light’s relationship to our environment and ecosystems. Steeped in our current moment of rapidly improving technology and its social implications, these artists are nonetheless harnessing these advancements to redefine the role of light and shadow in visual art.

FEE:
The selected applicant will be awarded a $2,000 honorarium.
