The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) is at an exciting new phase in its evolution as the only national LGBTQ+ organization dedicated to Asian American, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander communities. We launch forward with the search for new leadership to build off our successes and vision with our community members on the future they want and the direction of NQAPIA. This person will serve as a liaison to our staff, board, and community, and should embody both exceptional leadership and community pride.

Our new Executive Director will be responsible for supervising a team of 5 staff members and several consultants, oversee all national programs, manage partner organization relationships including fiscal sponsorships, fundraise with institutional and individual donors, and direct the communications strategy for the organization. This full-time permanent position is for immediate hire and reports to an active and supportive Board of Directors.

About NQAPIA
NQAPIA is a federation of LGBTQ+ Asian American, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander organizations. NQAPIA seeks to build the capacity of local LGBTQ+ AAPI organizations, invigorate grassroots organizing, develop leadership, and challenge homophobia, racism, and xenophobia. NQAPIA is an independent non-profit organization.

Requirements

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Maximize and sustain NQAPIA’s impact by:

  • Driving NQAPIA towards success in this moment. At this critical time for the organization, be able to hit the ground running and leverage the unique moment to keep NQAPIA on track to grow into its strategic plan and goals and/or adapt them to changing circumstances. Manage programs, fundraising, and evaluation (including member engagement, convenings, conferences, fundraising events, and visibility). Be able to work flexibly and with dynamism to the changing realities of remote organizing until such time it is safe to travel and organize in-person again.
  • Collaborating with member groups, and NQAPIA staff and board to create strategic plans and goals, measures of success, and fundraising goals. Work closely with the Board of Directors on organizational policy developments and long term planning. Ensure targets and benchmarks for organizational strategic plan are met.
  • Managing staff and consultants by supporting, giving feedback, training, and coaching in organizing, public policy, and communications. Be able to recognize the individual strengths of a small team and manage from a place of solidarity and mutual support.
  • Increasing overall giving to NQAPIA by building and maintaining quality relationships with grassroots members, local organizations, donors and funders. Cultivating relationships with current funders to continue and increase support and prospecting new donors. Planning and overseeing annual regional fundraising events that brings communities together (as appropriate and as per local regulations); developing a fundraising strategy that helps empower donors at all levels. Developing foundation funding proposals and final reports with broad input from member groups, staff, board members, and allies.
  • Overseeing all finances and compliance: Work with relevant staff, board members, and outside advisors to ensure overall organizational fiscal health. Develop an annual organizational budget. Ensure nonprofit legal obligations, tax reporting, and financial accounting/audit are met as needed.
  • Communicating authentically and with purpose: Ensuring high-quality communication of NQAPIA’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities to a wide range of stakeholders including member groups, community stakeholders, media, and donors.
  • Lead operational efficiency within the organization. Managing overall organizational infrastructure and developing new systems to ensure operations flow and support staff, programs, and activities, as needed.

Qualifications

We’re seeking candidates rooted in the values of social justice, grassroots power building, racial and queer solidarity, and community organizing, who excel in relationship-building and people management, are results-oriented, and have strong fundraising and project management skills. The ideal candidate has:

  • Senior management experience: At least 5 years of experience in a senior management role, preferably in the nonprofit space and / or with grassroots organizations; equivalent community leadership experience in nontraditional organizational structures is also welcomed.
  • Proven fundraising experience: Exceptional and demonstrated ability to manage and cultivate relationships with foundations, corporations, major donors, and small grassroots donors.
  • Talent management experience: Strong ability to recruit, promote, train, and support talented staff while also engaging in the self-reflection that comes with being a good leader.
  • Financial management experience: Proficient with developing, managing, and reporting on budgets. Ideally has Quickbooks or other similar financial software suite expertise.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written skills to interact effectively with staff, board members, member groups, funders and external contacts.
  • Track record of being a strong self-starter and good self-awareness; ability to develop new ideas on how to accomplish goals and identifying processes to optimize work flows and completion
  • Passion for social justice work: Motivation to create change and dogged persistence to run a growing and dynamic national organization that runs campaigns with many moving pieces, develops local organizations and leaders, and advances critical programs.
  • Keen understanding of AAPI LGBTQ+ communities, especially AAPI LGBTQ+ organizations (perhaps as part of our member network already), as well as knowledge of LGBTQ+ or/and AAPI leaders, allies, and advocates across the U.S.
  • Experience and awareness of traditionally underrepresented groups and the needs confronting them, including but not limited to: South Asians, Southeast Asians, Pacific Islanders, women, people of transgender experience, young people, immigrants, and persons with limited English proficiency.
  • Familiarity with immigrants’ rights, organizational capacity development programs, LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice and solidarity work is helpful.
  • Competence in Asian and/or Pacific Island language(s) is a plus.
  • Position requires travel, averaging up to 2-3 times a month, including nights and weekends. (Travel is currently paused).

Salary and Benefits: Full-time exempt. Salary minimum is $75,000; negotiable based on experience. Competitive benefits include employer-paid health and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, sick leave, paid vacation, and holidays.
