This park has drawn artists fascinated by its fire glows and lava flows since its inception in 1912. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few National Parks outside of Alaska and Yellowstone that are in active volcanic areas. Open to all artists, writers, musicians, or performance artists.

Sacred Volcanoes, Rainforest, Beaches & Lava.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, founded in 1916 at the very inception of the Park Service, has hosted numerous painters and writers throughout the years, including Mark Twain, who wrote about his stay at the Volcano House on the rim of Kilauea, as well as modernist legends like Ansel Adams. This otherworldly park has drawn artists from the very beginning of the Park Service’s History. Be inspired by the sacred aura of the Big Island’s revered two volcanoes, as well as the lava flows, lava tubes, and rainforests of Mauna Loa and Kilauea, which have rare endangered species. NPAF’s past artists in residence include Musician and Actor Will Oldham, Composer Byron Yasui, Artist Emma Stibbon, Installation Artist Hasan Elahi, and many others.

GRANT REQUIREMENTS: Any artist working in any medium, digital or analog, including writing of any type, and performance art of any type are accepted. Any site-specific work involving reversible changes to the landscape is usually not permitted.

ELIGIBLE: All of NPAF’s Call for Entry opportunities accept submissions from national and international artists, writers, and performance artists. Old work, new work, experimental work, even previously submitted applications to other NPAF residencies are accepted, as the selection panel changes with every opportunity.

FUNDS: The stipend may be used in any way the artist chooses but is paid after the residency. Reimbursement will require an official NPAF reimbursement form and receipts from the artist(s). The chosen resident must be able to cover travel, equipment, and food costs during the period of residency. Review more details regarding grant funds on our FAQ pages for each residency.

INSURANCE: The artist and their companions are responsible for themselves to be fully insured and in time for the residency. Neither NPAF nor the NPS are responsible and will not cover any damages to the artist(s), property, or anything during the term of the residency or public engagements.

AGREEMENT: NPAF Artist(s) in Residence may be required to agree to and sign other agreements in order to fulfill the residency obligations and receive funding and grants. These may involve permitting, visas, adhering to park policies, and events / presentations.
