Violence, Empowerment, an Allyship: The Asian Experience in America

Monday, May 10, 2021

Hate crimes against Asian Americans have risen throughout the pandemic, ranging from the racist labeling of COVID-19 as a “Chinese virus” to the tragedy of the mass shooting in Atlanta. While violence directed at Asian Americans is not a new phenomenon, its current resurgence demands a response. How can we all be allies to this community?

Join NJPAC for a conversation about the history of anti-Asian bias in the United States, the relationship between the Black and Asian communities, and most importantly, how this burgeoning strain of racism can be countered.

Be a part of this urgently necessary virtual discussion at 7 PM on Monday, May 10. Professor Rose Cuison-Villazor, Vice Dean and Professor of Rutgers Law and founder of the Rutgers Center for Immigration Law, Policy and Justice, will moderate this conversation. Congressman Andy Kim, of New Jersey’s Third District, will provide opening remarks.

Panelists taking part in the discussion will include:

Jamie Lew, professor of Sociology at Rutgers-Newark, who studies education, immigration, race and ethnicity. Her book, Asian Americans in Class: Charting the Achievement Gap Among Korean American Youths, was published in 2006.

Lucia Liu, the Founder & CEO of Rock The Boat, a podcast and community organization focused on Asians who challenge the status quo.

Yoland Skeete, a multimedia artist, and documentarian, and the author of When Newark Had A Chinatown.
