Salon Concert - "Sound of Asia"

Saturday, May 4, 2024
7PM

Experience a modern interpretation of East Asian folk music at an upcoming salon concert featuring renowned composer Tan Dun. Tan’s compositions, ranging from his Grawemeyer Award-winning opera Marco Polo to his acclaimed film score in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, reflect his Chinese heritage and transcend cultural boundaries. His Concerto for Guzheng and Strings, derived from his earlier theater piece Ghost Opera, blends Chinese, Tibetan, English, and American influences, creating an electrifying performance akin to a rampant Chinese dragon. Joining Tan is emerging Japanese composer Madoka Mori, presenting two captivating works for viola—Sakura and Dragonflies (U.S. premiere)—inspired by traditional Japanese folk songs. Additionally, Stephanie Chou’s Dragon pays homage to the Dragon Year, symbolizing prosperity and unity across cultures. Through their compositions, these artists bridge the gap between East and West, classical and folk traditions, offering a captivating musical journey for audiences worldwide.
