DIRECTOR IN ATTENDANCE

Take Me Home Mais Darwazah, Jordan/U.K/Palestine, 2008, 54 min, Arabic with English subtitles

Take Me Home is an observational account of the lives of a dispersed Palestinian family. The film follows the director as she questions her personal fears and clings on to the resonance of intimate moments shared with her grandmother and great aunt, who are settled in Damascus.

Aisha’s Journey Mais Darwazah, Jordan, 2009, 8mins, Arabic with English subtitles

The prevailing spirit of the terrain in the northern part of Jordan challenges a current political reality which imposes endless borders and disconnects from a rich progressive history. Aisha, a woman from this region, whose words echo from 2275 BC, reminds us how human emotion is timeless and how a cry that’s thousands of years old still resonates in today’s contemporary world.

Biography

Having worked across the Middle East in architecture, graphic design and television documentaries, Mais Darwazah’s independent film career started by making short experimental films. After finishing her undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture from Kingston University (UK, 1997), she received the Chevening scholarship from the British Council, completing an MA in Documentary Directing at Edinburgh College of Art (UK, 2007). Her first feature My Love Awaits Me by the Sea (80’, 2013) had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since received several awards from international film festivals. She resides and works in Jordan.
