Campaign 選挙 (Senkyo)

Saturday, March 15, 2014
5 – 7:30PM

When documentary filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda heard that his university classmate Kazuhiko “Yama-san” Yamuchi was running for public office, he quickly dropped everything in order to film the campaign. In true DIY spirit, Soda shot, recorded sound and carried all his own equipment over 12 days as Yama-san, a self-employed, inexperienced, uncharismatic, ordinary man, found his voice in the Liberal Democratic Party’s idiosyncratic style of electoral contest. Yama-san’s journey through the machine of Japanese politics—running around, bowing, being scolded by superiors, shouting through loudspeakers at indifferent citizens—offers a fascinating and intimate insight into modern Japanese society.
