Seeking Artists: Chinese American Arts Council/Gallery 456 scheduling exhibitions for 2022

CAAC/Gallery 456

456 Broadway, 3rd Floor
NY 10013

Oct 29, 2021

Gallery 456 is the visual arts exhibition space of the non-profit Chinese American Arts Council. Since 1989 we have presented more than 250 artists from the US and around the world, with an emphasis on contemporary artists of Chinese heritage, offering many their first opportunity for a NYC gallery exhibit or solo show.

Located in Soho, our 700 square foot gallery presents eight to twelve shows each year, along with periodic special events and arts-related programming. We select works from emerging as well as more established artists representing a range of styles.

We are currently scheduling exhibits for the 2022 calendar year and welcome submissions from artists or groups of artists. There is no fee to apply, and we accept proposals on an ongoing basis, but submissions before November 31, 2021 will receive priority consideration for the upcoming year.

As a non-commercial gallery, we primarily provide exhibition space, staffing, promotion to our mailing list and local Chinese-language media, and an opening reception. We do not offer stipends or transportation. Artists are responsible for shipping/transporting and installing the work, and any expenses specific to their show. Shows generally run for 4 weeks, at the end of which artists are required to arrange for removal of their works. There is no fee for the space, but CAAC receives a small commission if any works are sold.

We are open to any art form suited to our space: usually painting, photography, works on paper, as well as sculpture, ceramics, and textiles. Installations must accommodate access and foot-traffic. As our gallery adjoins an office, there may be practical constraints for works with sound, video, lighting, or electronic components. Our exhibit scheduling is not generally conducive to performance art.
