DESCRIPTION:SITUATIONS is pleased to announce "Under the Surface"\, an exhi
 bition of new paintings by Masamitsu Shigeta. The exhibition marks a new d
 irection in Shigeta’s practice\, foregrounding wood carving as a means o
 f constructing the image itself. Working directly into wood panels\, Shige
 ta draws out quiet details within still lifes of potted plants and citysca
 pes\, revealing patterning\, texture\, and poetry within the surface. Mott
 led sunlight\, the outline of a tree\, or a grid of skyscraper windows is 
 defined through incised lines and forms before paint is applied in layers.
  Scratching and cutting back into the surface introduces contrasting color
 s and textures\, further defining the pictorial elements.\n
