Rising Circle Theater Collective Presents: GRACE
Jul 9, 2009 - Jul 12, 2009721 Broadway, 5th Floor
New York, NY 10003
Subway: R to 8th St.
In partnership with Studio Tisch, a program sponsored by New York University’s Graduate Acting Alumni Association, Rising Circle Theater Collective presents a workshop production of the original play, GRACE with the aim of galvanizing support for an off-Broadway run in 2010. Written by Sanjit De Silva and Deepa Purohit and directed by Nandita Shenoy. Rising Circle Theater Collective's mission is to expand the American story by giving voice to the stories people of color.
GRACE explores the journey of a young South Asian law student spending the summer between his second and third years of law school working at a refugee camp in Central Africa and is based on interviews conducted by the writers. The play follows an idealistic American law student, Sunil Dalal, as he journeys to Zambia to intern at UN refugee camps there. Along the way he meets Josephine, a Ugandan social worker, who struggles at an under-resourced refugee camp, and Grace, a young refugee, who is trying to put the pieces of her life back together. As Sunil digs deeper into this world, he grapples with what it means to pursue your dreams and the sacrifices that come with it. He must decide how he will move forward at this crucial turning point in his life.
