Environmental Composition 2008 No 1
Dec 11, 2009 - Feb 19, 2010417 Lafayette St., 4th Floor, New York 10003
Environmental Composition 2008 #1 Composition 2006 #3 (Spirit), Tonecycle Base 65 Hz, 2:3:7 (2007) combines video projection as the illumination source with a large-scale graphite drawing on black paper set in an algorithmic realization of a continuous sound environment. The video and sound components involve phenomena in the medium of air suggesting an ephemeral form continually vanishing into non-existence, while the act of creation is continually repeated. The work is never offered as a complete form but only revealed fragmentally in a procession. The sound environment component of this work, Tonecycle Base 65 Hz, 2:3:7 (2007), consists of the linear superposition of 36 sine wave frequencies based on the invariant harmonic ratios of 2, 3 and 7, all ascending imperceptibly to fixed frequencies and then descending to the starting frequencies. Since sound interacts with physical objects and other sound waves, and the energy flow of the sine waves is preserved and continues to propagate, the waves interfere with each other at any given point in space and the algebraic sum of this simple linear equation of frequencies and amplitudes creates very complex interference patterns. Depending on the relative phase and the distance each wave has to travel in the space, the placement of the waves varies according to their wavelengths and the phase relationships between the waves also vary spatially. Each sine wave component has five harmonically related frequencies that have the same starting point (unison) but over time gradually separate while moving in the same direction. These extremely close frequencies and their harmonics constantly produce beat cycles that traverse through a continuum of phase angles. Copyright © Jung Hee Choi 2007 – 2009
“Highlights of the exhibition include Jung Hee Choi’s installation 'Environmental Composition 2008 #1: Spirit (2006) and Tonecycle Base 65 Hz, 2:3:7 (2007)', where the audiences experience the subtle change, stillness, and variations of light and sound, while questioning the relationship between being and understanding, perceiving and communicating, and oneself and others.” -- Yu Jin Hwang, Curator, Gallery Korea Faces & Facts: Korean Contemporary Art in New York
“Universal themes of light and sound are the true subjects of Jung Hee Choi’s work… Her incense smoke-inspired pencil drawings, light installations, and sound work, when installed together, create a distinct and transformative environment.” -- Judy Kim, Curator, Brooklyn Museum Contemporary Korean Art: Present and Presented
