Empowering Chinatown through Ceramics

May 11 – June 1, 2024
12 – 2PM

Saturdays 5/11, 5/18, 5/25, and 6/1, from 12-2pm

“Empowering Chinatown through Ceramics” is a series of workshops introducing Ethnic Studies and art making to Chinatown residents. Artist and What Can We Do? awardee Cathleen Luo will be leading socially engaged conversations while teaching the basics about ceramics, reflecting on identity and collective power.

Cathleen Luo is a ceramicist and art educator based in Harlem, NYC. They are currently working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum as an educator. Their sculptures reappropriate surrealist techniques to explore Luo’s queer and disabled Asian American identities. Their work reclaims the term “queer” by purposefully stretching and distorting their figures beyond anatomical accuracy,

This project is a part of the What Can We Do? Artist Grant program, presented by Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to Council Members Christopher Marte and Sandra Ung.
