The Kyopo Project - Presentation with Artist CYJO
Fri.
May 16, 6pm
The Kyopo Project began in November 2004 and is comprised of
photographic and textual portraits that explore the nature of Kyopo
identities of first, second and third generations. The over 200 Kyopos
profiled embrace a myriad of roles in their communities. They range in age
from 5-90 and were raised in Brazil, Canada, China, Brazil, Denmark, France,
Japan, the UK, as well as in the U.S.
The Project was created to engage the public in the new movement of the
Korean Diaspora characterized by Kyopos adopting roles and professions
outside of stereotypical norms and traditional expectations. Today's Kyopos
are an active presence in politics, arts and entertainment, literature,
sciences and all aspects of their communities. This phenomenon is an
inevitable result of Kyopos spending a longer time in their respective
adopted countries and speaking the local language with command. What
surfaced is a multiculturalism that's infused in many of the participants'
embrace and the many definitions of their identities.
An exhibition of the Kyopo project will take place at the Korea Society from
May through mid-August 2008.

Yoshiko Chuma and The School of Hard Knocks: POOM2 A Page Out of Order M to M
May 15-17, 7:30pm
"Yoshiko Chuma is a maverick, utterly unique, a 'one off' as the British say... Gifted with great personal force and intelligence, at heart she is an experimentalist, a fierce explorer with a profound sense of structure," said Amanda Smith from Dance Magazine, 2007.
Dance, live music, video projections and commentary collide in 10 scenes on a red-saturated stage in the middle of a driving rainstorm in POOM2, the latest chapter in the on-going dance/installation A Page Out of Order by Yoshiko Chuma and her company The School of Hard Knocks. Inspired by Teinosuke Kinugasa's 1927 silent film A Page of Madness, the current episode investigates the relatively unknown country of Manipur in northeast India, the site of Japan's final batter of World War II. An international cast of real and electronic performers will appear on film and via live call-ins. Chuma, who conceives, choreographs and directs this production, along with her collaborators have garnered 8 Bessie Awards and created more than 60 full-length performances for theaters and site-specific venues throughout the world.
Admission: $28 general, $25 JS members

| Zhang Jie-Song
Red Blood of the Dragon’s Psyche
June 6-August 6
Opening Reception: Thu. June 5,
6-9pm
Gallery Hours: By appointment
Red Blood of the Dragon’s Psyche, an exhibition series presented by Salomon Arts Gallery and curator Zhang Jie-Song, asserts the belief that if we wish to know and value Chinese art with sincerity, then we must learn to know and value China, Chinese people, Chinese thought. The work of 10 Chinese contemporary artists is to be presented throughout this exhibition series and arranged so as to highlight the dominant provinces that have defined the terrain of Chinese psychological experience within the lifespan of “Modern China”. Towards this end, the works of the artists will be presented alongside information on China in the form of news-stories, essays, and video projection intended to provide a constellation of social and historical points, by which the audience may navigate with greater insight the vast, deep, and roaring waters of Chinese psychological and (consequently) artistic thought. It is the placement of the artists’ ideas alongside a vision of their world.
The first exhibition in the Red Blood of the Dragon’s Psyche series opens on June 6th, 2008, and will feature the works of Chen Nong, Zhang Han, Fu Yue Hui, Zhao Bo, and Zhang Yu Ying.
Admission: Free
Venue: Salomon Arts, 83 Leonard St. 4th Floor, NYC
