We are a diverse alliance of artists, organizations, and individual supporters who believe that working together as a community is essential to nurturing the development of artists and arts organizations, and to providing a political voice for this community.

Our members reflect the experiences of the city’s growing multi-ethnic Asian population, ranging from new immigrants to 4th generation Asian Americans. They create, present, and produce work in the visual arts, performance, theatre, film and media, music, and dance, from the traditional to the cutting edge.

Membership Requirements:

  • Self-identify as an Asian American arts group or individual
  • Purpose is to promote and support the arts or primary focus is artistic
  • Artist or group must be based in New York City (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island), or conduct a significant amount of their artistic activities within New York City

We also offer associate memberships for groups or individuals who support our mission, but who do not meet all of the above criteria. Examples of associate members are: Asian American community groups who are not arts-focused; community arts groups who are non-Asian (multi-ethnic, focused on another ethnic or cultural community, or not ethnic-specific); individual artists who are not Asian but support our mission; or Asian American artists and arts groups from other geographic areas. Associate members are eligible to post listings of Asian American arts events in our e-calendar and on our website. If you have questions about associate membership, email Kelly Kuwabara.

Although our membership reflects a diversity of backgrounds and beliefs, we hold shared values about creating and strengthening this community. In keeping with this, and with the spirit of our mission, we do not support work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, or that is exploitative in nature. Membership is not guaranteed to any applicant, and decisions are made at the Alliance’s discretion.

Membership in the Alliance reflects a commitment to the Alliance’s mission, and a willingness to create positive working relationships with other members and with Alliance representatives.

The primary reasons to join the Alliance as either a regular member or an associate are to be part of a community that:

  • Supports our mission and goals;
  • Encourages collaboration and cooperation among members;
  • Creates collaborations with other organizations and communities whose goals are in sync with our own.
