Since 1994, the Asian American Arts Alliance has awarded a total of more than a half-million dollars to over 60 organizations in the New York area. Partnerships with institutions including the Booth Ferris Foundation, Joyce Mertz Gilmore Foundation, JPMorganChase Foundation, Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Rockefeller Foundation have helped us to increase groups' access to funding and technical assistance. The diverse artists and groups working in the Asian American community often operate below the radar of mainstream funding sources. In tandem with workshops and technical assistance, our grants programs are designed to support the rich and diverse artistic talent within this community by providing greater access to funding. Current Grant Programs We have increased our grantmaking in the past year, with a larger pool of money for small groups (through our SOAR program) and a new grant opportunity for individual artists (The Urban Artist Initiative/UAI). In 2007, we will pilot a small regrant program specifically for performing arts groups in Chinatown (the Chinatown Arts Initiative). Grant decisions are made by an independent panels of artists, arts administrators, and community leaders, and panelists change from year to year. Please email Kelly Kuwabara with any questions or need help completing your application with the subject header "Grants Question" or call (212) 941-9208 ext. 3. SOAR The Small Organization Arts Regrants (SOAR) program, formerly known as the JPMorganChase SMARTS Regrants, is our longest-running grantmaking program, providing awards of $1,000-$3,000 to small Asian American arts groups in NYC. SOAR supports groups who play an important role in their community (however that community is defined). The program funds projects that build community among Asian Americans or within specific Asian ethnic communities; and which preserve, reflect, or enhance understanding of Asian American experiences. Through SOAR, the Alliance supports groups that are exploring the complex and diverse realities of being Asian in America, and the cultural values that shape our community's important issues. Priority is given to groups where the community that is represented has a voice in the organization. Stay tuned for information about next year's program. In the first year of UAI grantmaking, awards ranging from $250 to $2,500 supported new works by artists of color in New York City, in all areas of visual, literary, and performing arts. This Year, fellowships of $2,000 each will be available to individual artists for their artistic and professional development. 50 artists were awarded for this year's cycle while 20 artists were nominated finalists.
